Shepton Mallet displays a delightful mixture of both old and new, a combination of ancient market town and modern industrial community, nestling itself against the western edge of the Mendip Hills.
The 50-foot high Market Cross in the centre of the town dates from 1500, and a thriving outdoor market is still held around the Cross every Friday.
Many fine examples of 17th Century cloth merchants' houses can still be found in the town.
A number of Roman remains, including the earliest Christian artefact found in England - an amulet - were discovered in the town in the 1990s.
